Bourne knew where he was nowThe tunnel was between “Washington” and “New London,
Connecticut”! It was no more than five minutes away! He drove the jeep down to the street
paralleling the river, and again there were frightened, hysterical crowdsThe police were shouting
through loudspeakers, first in English and then in Russian, explaining the terrible consequences if
anyone tried to swim across the water, the searchlights swinging back and forth, picking up the
floating bodies of those who had tried in the northern compounds
“The tunnel, the tunnel! Open the tunnel!”
The screams from the excited crowds became a chant that could not physically be denied; the
underground pipeline was about to be assaultedJason leaped out of the surrounded jeep, pocketing
the remaining three flares, and propelled his way, arms and shoulders working furiously, often
fruitlessly, through the crushing, crashing bodiesThere was nothing else for it; he pulled out a
flare and ripped the release from its recessThe spewing flame had its effect; heat and fire were
catalystsHe ran through the crowd, pummeling everyone in front of him, shoving the blinding,
spitting flare into terrified faces, until he reached the front and faced a cordon of guards in the
uniforms of the United States ArmyIt was crazy, insane! The world had gone nuts!
No! There! In the fenced-off parking lot was the fuel truck! He broke through the cordon of
guards, holding up his computerized release card, and ran up to the soldier with the highest-ranking
insignia on his uniform, a colonel with an AK-47 strapped to his waist who was as panicked as any
officer of high rank he had ever seen since Saigon
“My identification is with the name ‘Archie’ and you can clear it immediatelyEven now I
refuse to speak our language, only English! Is that understood? Discipline is discipline!”
“Togda?” yelled the officer, questioning the moment, then instantly returning to English in a
maddeningly Boston accent“Of course, we know of you,” he cried, “but what can I do? This is an
    uncontrollable riot!”
“Has anyone passed through the tunnel in the last, say, half hour?”
“No one, absolutely, no one! Our orders are to keep the tunnel closed at all costs!”
“GoodGet on the loudspeakers and disperse the crowdsTell them the crisis has passed and
    the danger with it
“How can I? The fires are everywhere, the explosions everywhere!”
    “They’ll stop soon
    “How do you know that?”
“I know! Do as I say!”
“Do as he says!” roared a voice behind Bourne; it was Benjamin, his face and shirt drenched
with sweat“And I hope to hell you know what you’re talking about!”
    “Where did you come from?”
“Where you know; how is another questionTry scaring the shit out of Capital HQ for a chopper
ordered by an apoplectic Krupkin from a hospital bed in Moscow
    “ ‘Apoplectic’—not bad for a Russian—”
“Who gives me such orders?” yelled the officer of the guard“You are only a young man!”
“Check me out, buddy, but do it quick,” answered Benjamin, holding out his card“Otherwise I
think I’ll have you transferred to TashkentNice scenery, but no private toiletsMove, you

    “Cal—if—fornia, here I—”

@@@@@Needless to say, it held my attention
I have been teaching professionally since 1984 It has been a great experience and rewardingIt is also a disturbing profession, for I have
taught thousands of individuals and I see one thing in common in all of us, myself includedWe all have tremendous potential, and we all are blessed with giftsYet, the one thing that holds all of us back is some degree of self-doubtIt is not so much the lack of technical information that holds us back, but more the lack of self-confidenceSome are more affected than others
Once we leave school, most of us know that it is not as much a matter of college degrees or good grades that countIn the real world outside of academics, something more than just grades is requiredI have heard it called "guts," "chutzpah," "balls," "audacity," "bravado," "cunning," "daring," "tenacity" and "brilliance This factor, whatever it is labeled, ultimately decides one's future much more than school grades
Inside each of us is one of these brave, brilliant and daring charactersThere is also the flip side of that character: people who could get down on their knees and beg if necessaryAfter a year in Vietnam, as a Marine Corps pilot, I intimately got to know both of those characters-inside of me One is not better than the other
Yet, as a teacher, I recognized that it was excessive fear and self-doubt that were the greatest detractors of personal genius It broke my heart to see students know the answers, yet lack the courage to act on the answerOften in the real world, it's not the smart that get ahead but the bold
In my personal experience, your financial genius requires both technical knowledge as well as courageIf fear is too strong, the genius is suppressedIn my classes I strongly urge students to learn to take ?risks, to be bold, to let their genius convert that fear into power and brillianceIt works for some and just terrifies othersI have come to realize that for most people, when it comes to the subject of money, they would rather play it safeI have had to field questions such as: Why take risks? Why should I bother developing my financial IQ? Why should I become financially literate?
And I answer, "Just to have more opti

What could he hope to gain?

Martinez's body achedHe was feeling a reaction from the previous night, and all morning as they had worked up the mountain he had plodded along, wretched with anxiety, his limbs trembling, his body wet with perspirationHis mind had played a few necessary tricks on him; the connection between his reconnaissance and Hearn's death was happily smudged, or at least on the surface, but ever since the second ambush he had been feeling the apprehension of a man in a dream who knows he is guilty, is waiting for his punishment, and cannot remember his crime
Toiling up the first slopes of the mountain, Martinez brooded about the Japanese soldier he had killedHe could see his face clearly, far more vividly now in the cruel dazzle of the morning sun than he had the night before, and in his memory he traced over every motion the Jap had madeOnce again Martinez could feel the blood trickling over his fingers, leaving them stickyHe examined his hand, and with a pang of horror discovered a dried black thread of blood in the webbing between two of his fingersHe grunted with disgust and the excessive fear one feels in crushing an insectAnd immediately afterward he could see the Jap picking his nose
For what? They were on the mountain now, and if he didn'tNo kill Jap, go back to beach, he told himselfBut that made no sense either, and his anxiety prickled along his backHe gave up the effort to think and trudged along in the middle of the platoon, finding no release in the exertion of the ascentThe more tired he felt the tauter his nerves becameHis limbs had the heavy painful sensitivity of a man in fever

Simple enough, but it added a further tension between Clellan and himself, which Hearn detestedDespite himself, he paid greater attention to the way Clellan made up the General's tent each morning, and it became a humiliating duel between themTo his own surprise, Hearn discovered that the General was making him vulnerable; he was beginning to care that the tent was made up correctlyEach morning now he approached the General's tent with distaste, figuratively squared his shoulders, and then went in to continue his feud with Clellan
Clellan had started itA tall slim Southerner with a complete and insolent poise, a facility for never questioning himself, he had resented any of Hearn's suggestions from the very beginn
